Safety

Safety is a collaborative effort. Whether you are walking, riding a bicycle, driving a vehicle or riding a scooter, we all have to pay attention and be aware. Watch our videos, made possible from grant from the State of Nevada Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety, for cycling safety tips.

Safety Tips for Pedestrians

  • Follow the rules. Cross at lights and stop signs and follow their instructions.
  • Use sidewalks. If there’s a sidewalk, use it.
  • No sidewalk? Walk facing traffic and stay as far from cars as possible.
  • Stay alert. Don’t use your phone or wear headphones while walking near traffic.
  • Cross at corners. Use crosswalks or intersections whenever you can.
  • No crosswalk? Pick a well-lit spot where you can see cars clearly. Wait for a safe break in traffic before crossing.
  • Make eye contact. Don’t assume drivers see you. Look at them to be sure.
  • Be easy to see. Wear bright clothes during the day, and wear something reflective or carry a flashlight at night.
  • Watch for cars. Stay alert around driveways and parking lots where cars may be turning or backing up.
  • Don’t ride or walk impaired. Alcohol and drugs make it harder to walk safely and judge traffic.
