Overview

Roadway funding makes it possible for the RTC and its member agencies (City of Las Vegas, City of North Las Vegas, City of Henderson, City of Mesquite, City of Boulder City and Unincorporated Clark County) to move forward with the planning and creation of transportation projects that benefit millions of Southern Nevada residents and visitors. These projects create jobs, put small businesses to work and improve the local economy.

Three main sources of funding come from Fuel Revenue Indexing (FRI), Motor Vehicle Fuel Tax (MVFT) and sales tax collected in Clark County is used to fund roadway projects.

Funding Sources

Motor Vehicle Fuel Tax (MVFT)

Nine cents of every gallon of gasoline purchased in Clark County is used to fund roadway projects.

Fuel Revenue Indexing (FRI)

An additional funding program approved by voters to tie motor vehicle fuel tax (MVFT) to inflation. The initial three year program took place from 2014-2016 with a 10-year extension currently in place through 2026.

Fuel Revenue Indexing has been a vital funding source for roadway improvements in Clark County since 2014. It adjusts local fuel taxes annually based on inflation to ensure transportation funding keeps pace with rising construction costs. This system has enabled the RTC to complete hundreds of projects and support thousands of local jobs—without introducing new taxes. FRI ensures stable, inflation-sensitive funding for maintaining and building roads. Fuel taxes are efficient, fair, and directly tied to road usage.

Since 2014, FRI has:

  • Funded over 700 roadway projects, with 501 of those completed.
  • Supported 22,000+ jobs
  • Generated $1+ billion in funding
  • Leveraged more than $3 billion in additional investment

If FRI expires in 2026:

FRI has helped keep Southern Nevada’s road network safe, efficient, and ready for continued growth. Without it, critical improvements and economic development opportunities are at risk.

  • Annual roadway funding would drop by two-thirds—from $300 million to $100 million
  • Clark County could lose the ability to pursue key infrastructure projects and competitive federal grants

The RTC’s Streets and Highways Engineering team works behind the scenes to plan, design, and deliver the roads we all rely on. From fixing potholes to building major corridors, our engineers help turn funding into real-world improvements.
