About RTC FAST

The RTC’s Freeway and Arterial System of Transportation (FAST) team has the responsibility to monitor and manage traffic on both local and interstate roadways throughout Southern Nevada. Traffic operations are monitored and controlled through the traffic management center and uses various ITS devices to manage traffic in real-time, including traffic sensors, traffic counters, traffic signals, closed-circuit television cameras, and dynamic message signs strategically deployed on Southern Nevada roadways. These systems are used to monitor traffic incidents and daily travel throughout the region and equips our team with the capabilities to manage traffic congestion and improve traffic safety.

RTC staff is responsible for two major areas that make up the FAST system:

  • The Arterial Management Section, which includes traffic signal operations for surface roadways throughout the region for roadways such as Eastern, Sahara, and Charleston;
  • And the Freeway Management Section, which includes monitoring and operations of the entire freeway network such as the 215 beltway, I-11 and I-15.

FAST is a department within the RTC. FAST deploys strategies on behalf of Clark County, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and the cities of Boulder City, Henderson, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and Mesquite by Interlocal Agreement.

What We Manage

Traffic Signal Operations

With our regional partners, RTC FAST supports operation and maintenance on nearly 1,700 signalized intersections, 1,168 arterial & freeway cameras, 1,923 miles of fiber optic communications cable, 168 dynamic message signs/active traffic management gantries, 74 ramp meters, 650 freeway flow detectors throughout the valley and 8 Wrong-Way Entry Detections Systems. These devices help the RTC FAST manage traffic in real-time to keep vehicles flowing as smoothly as possible for freeway and arterial systems throughout Southern Nevada.

Active Traffic Management (ATM) System

RTC FAST works collaboratively with the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) to manage the Active Traffic Management (ATM) system along I-15 and U.S. 95. These high-resolution digital displays show real-time information about incidents and lane restrictions in order to improve traffic movement and increase safety by potentially reducing the number and severity of crashes.

FAST History

RTC FAST is one of the first truly integrated Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) organizations in the country. On July 3, 2004, the RTC became the official administrator of FAST. NDOT and the RTC became full-fledged funding partners, contributing to the operations and management traffic on both the arterials and freeways.

Southern Nevada’s freeway ramp meters are a successful joint project of the RTC and NDOT, helping to improve motorist safety and the flow of traffic on the freeway. RTC FAST controls the Las Vegas Valley’s freeway ramp meters on 215 beltway, I-11, and I-15. The ramp meters are traffic signals with only a red and a green light that control cars merging onto the freeway, and they are consistently monitored by RTC FAST to ensure that they do not create congestion on surface streets.
